Paddling the Heartbeat of Corsica

by: editor

Known as the most mountainous island in the Mediterranean, almost half of the island of Corsica is dedicated to nature reserves and it boasts over 20 summits of more than 6,600 feet. Located 56 miles west of Italy and 110 miles southeast of the French mainland, this "région" of France is a hot bed for adventure.

Here, a crew of Americans traveled to Corisca this past April to take advantage of epic river conditions thanks in part to spring snowmelt and rainfall. Corsica does have a reputation for unpredictable water levels, and the best time seems to be from March until May. By the looks of this edit, they timed it just right.

Also worth noting, the Corsican Kayak Festival takes place annually during the first and second week of April.

There are a number travel options to consider for the recommended two-week journey, whether you catch a ferry across from the French mainland or fly from Sardinia. Corsica is a small island, about 100 by 50 miles, and the coastal roads are very good whereas the mountain zones are dodgy at best. You’ll also need to brush up on your Coriscan, as the French language has taken a back seat as a result of the local separatist movement.

Here’s a detailed, but dated, account of a group who paddled six rivers of variable grades, four in the south and two in the north.

There are several outfitters in Corsica that offer kayak rentals and guided tours along the island's rivers are available. Week-long package trips are also available and include equipment, rentals, and lodging. Some U.S.-based outfitters offer guided trips to the island as well.
