After two weekends of sublime and riotous roots music from more than 400 national and regional acts, the city's 41st Jazz & Heritage Festival has ended its run. Though one headliner was a no-show (Aretha Franklin) and opening day was plagued by thunderstorms and heavy rains, the crowds appeared to be in keeping with previous seven-day post-Katrina gatherings, which have ranged from 400,000 to 450,000. (Official figures will be released in a few days.) Not even the week's ever-worsening news of the oil-rig disaster off the nearby coast could disrupt the party-on spirit.
