La Ruta de los Conquistadores, a challenging four-day cross-country mountain biking event, has been recognized as one of the toughest multi-stage cycling races. Looking at these photos from the 2009 event, courtesy of La Ruta, we think they may be right.
Pedaling east from the shores of the Pacific Ocean through Costa Rica's vast mountain ranges to the shores of the Caribbean, riders face technical jungle trails, river crossings, mountain climbs, fast downhills and varying urban terrain.
Starting today and running through November 20, you can keep up with the action thanks to the event's live feed and webcast.
