A special pressurized suit and helmet that provides
an artificial atmosphere as well as providing
insulation against fire and extreme cold. When we first learned about Felix Baumgartner and his mission with Red Bull Stratos, one of the team's primary concerns was how the suit, and a human, might survive a sound barrier-breaking jump from 120,000 feet. Here's a great video of the suit and how Baumgartner's training to use the suit.
For reference sake, we're talking 700 miles-per-hour folks - which is the speed of fighter jets and the fastest land vehicle ever which clocked an average 771 mph in 1997. Scope the videos below to get some perspective, you can actually see the sound barrier bending around the jet.
Good luck, Felix. Send us a postcard from space, will ya? Better yet, check out GearJunkie's tips for how to Tweet from Everest, that's about one-seventh of the way up to your sweet-spot.
[Editor's note: Let's hope this isn't how the mission starts, breaking today. Not one of NASA's proudest moments.]
