At this year's Greener Gadgets Conference, which focuses on all of the issues surrounding energy efficiency and sustainable design of electronics, a farming-related App took home winning honors of the coveted design competition.
CEA’s Jason Oxman introduces the judges to the
design competition top 10.Titled "AUG/Living Goods Program," AUG is a concept that encourages the localization of living goods (produce, meats, dairy) through the use of a bar-coded directory stored in an App on the mobile device of your choosing.
Let's say you find yourself in the produce aisle at your local market trying to find the best lime for your Corona. Simply break-out your device, launch AUG and scan the barcode. Whammo. You can tell where the lime comes from, the farm's bio and user comments on the farm, and even the pricing history. There's also a rewards function that stores your purchasing history after you check out.
Finalists were reviewed live Thursday at the conference in New York by judges Sarah Rich of Dwell Magazine, Julian Lwin of Lwindesign, and Andrew Wagner of ReadyMade, as well as a live audience who ultimately voted the Living Goods Program to the top.
Also worth noting, a solar powered tent with the likeness of something from Tron was in the contest, and in our POV, takes home the unofficial aesthetics award.
Product design consultancy Kaleidoscope, on behalf of Orange, utilized emerging eco-energy technology to optimize the second generation Orange Solar Tent - which was originally unveiled and tested at the 2003 Glastonbury festival as a hub to keep in touch with friends and electronics charged while onsite.
