The infamous Plum Island is on the market, and it can be all yours to live like Locke for an anticipated $50 million to $80 million - not including the cleanup dating back to the Cold War. Located a mile and half off the eastern tip of Long Island, New York's north fork, the fate of this mysterious government animal disease laboratory is up for debate.

While all the LOST fans out there are crossing their fingers it turns into a Dharma Initiative-Disneyland, chances are the island will either become a government-run federal park and nature preserve, a renewable energy facility or a privately-owned destination resort property. At least, these are the options discussed thus far.

Besides the laboratory, the island is home to an abandoned U.S. Army base and a lighthouse that looks out onto Long Island Sound. Not to bring up LOST again, and Dharma, the Others, defunct military bases, animal and human testing, lighthouses, and general sketchiness, but we're pretty sure there's a connection between the island's debut on the real estate market and the show's grand finale.

Good timing, and the selling party can use every bit of it. They're building a $650 million lab in Kansas' Beef Belt to replace the Plum Island facility with an animal disease lab focusing on hoof and mouth, and other contagious diseases, researched by Agriculture Department scientists. They say the new lab will also allow research on diseases that can be passed from animals to humans, something currently not done at Plum Island.

We're hoping to add another intriguing destination to the itinerary, maybe as a combination of the current options: a federal preserve and park that doubles as a renewable energy initiative. Or, if every viewer of the last LOST season premier tossed $7 into the pot, they'd be fractional owners of the island. Magnetic source of light, and perhaps mankind, is not included.

Imagine the possibilities, aside from a few skeletons in the closet.

I grew up in Southeastern Connecticut and used to pass this place when taking the ferry from New London to Orient Point, LI - it always had an eeire quality about it. A nice piece of real estate no doubt.
