Two backcountry skiers hit the area surrounding Whistler on January 31st, hoping to get some fresh turns in before the Olympic crowds hit town. They rode a lift to the summit of Whistler, traversed to a tasty run called Cake Hole, and then headed out of the resort to a track at the bottom of the mountain. They hoped a passing snowmobile would give them a tow. They successfully hailed a sled, but instead of getting a tow, the duo was brought back to a military camp setup to patrol the outlying areas of the Olympic venue. After a bit of a hassle they were released to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for more questions, and then about five hours later they were dropped at their vehicle.

The skiers said they never passed any signs that indicated they were heading into a restricted area, but one has since been added.

Major Dan Thomas, a spokesman with the Integrated Security Unit, said in an e-mail that to prevent future incidents a sign has been posted at the relevant ski area boundary with the following message:

During the period of the Olympics and Paralympics (3 Feb - 24 March) anyone leaving the ski area boundary may find themselves in an Olympic restricted area, and they may be subject to surveillance, search and detention. Whistler Blackcomb Strongly urge you to reconsider your choice to ski out of bounds.

This is crazy - so much for the spirit of freedom and open athleticism for all.
